Other than specific cards that have "Trample Over Planeswalkers", you won't take any excess damage dealt to a Planeswalker

That said, Id prefer a commander with more than a single ETB effect, especially if that effect wont be too impactful until later in the game

Also, dont get stingy with your mana base, as stax effects often make things more expensive
