Leo Janek, the great Czech composer, created in The Makropulos Case an opera that ranks among the 20th century's finest. The libretto concerns a woman who has lived 300 years and finally faces her mortality. Sir Charles Mackerras, the greatest Janek interpreter of his era, conducts the Vienna Philharmonic and State Opera Chorus in this superb recording.
